After joining Eclipse in 2012 as the head coach of two teams (U10 boys and U14 girls), Luis made the jump into the position of Boys Director last season. This season Luis made one more jump and will be the club’s Assistant Director. His presence at our spring sessions this season has brought a new energy that has the players excited to play and improve. Here is your chance to “get to know” Luis a bit better!
Best Soccer Memory?
Professional soccer: Iniesta’s goal in 2009 against Chelsea with 2 minutes left to go into the Champions League Final
My Career: First college goal was a header (down to the keeper’s feet)
Favorite soccer teams?
FC Barcelona, Boca Juniors and any team Ronaldinho has and will ever play for
Favorite Part about Eclipse?
It has to be the atmosphere. The kids and the coaches are one, and the balance of learning and having fun is well-balanced to the point where kids can continue to get better while having the time of their lives. Some people wake up or go to work with a grudge, but I can honestly say I love coming to work every day.
Where were you born?
I was born in Peru – in the capital, Lima – and I grew up in Callao, the first South American pier, where soccer is all people talk about, read about, watch and play.
I played football in high school. It was fun, but I couldn’t stay away from soccer. I also watch basketball and support the Warriors -GO DUBS!
I love to grill – hamburgers, hotlinks, steaks, chicken, bacon-wrapped anything, oysters, lamb. Anything off the grill is good.
Goal! (Santiago Muñez) and the Batman trilogy
Favorite TV show?
ESPN Deportes Sportscenter (the Spanish version only contains soccer highlights) and That 70’s Show
Being from Peru, we listen to a lot of Salsa (I can’t dance though). Besides that, I like hip-hop and almost anything but classical.
3 Fun Facts?
1. My proudest possession is a Barcelona jersey signed by MESSI, INIESTA, XAVI, IBRAHIMOVIC, TOURE YAYA, ABIDAL, TITO VILANOVA, PEP GUARDIOLA, DANI ALVES, KEITA, BOJAN, PEDRO, VICTOR VALDEZ, MAXWELL, JONATHAN DOS SANTOS, RAFAEL MARQUEZ. It took me around 30 hours spent lingering around the hotel to collect the autographs.
2. I love playing the FIFA video game. I have a small collection of FIFA games from FIFA 98 to FIFA 14.
3. I learned to drive by the age of 13. I was tall enough to reach the steering wheel and pedals.
What message would you pass on to Eclipse players?
The only person you need to be better than is the person you were yesterday. You can’t change the past – you have to accept it and overcome it. That’s why you have to leave it all in every practice, and then you will see success.
